Multiple Electronic music festivals ran for their second summer in a row this passed summer in Toronto. The biggest among them were VELD and Digital Dreams, both festivals doubling in attendance from 2012 to 2013.
One of the
most known and highly respected DJ’s of the current community, DeadMau5, is a
sponsor and supporter of VELD, causing the event to be considered one of EDM’s best music festivals. The
tickets for VELD and Digital Dreams ranged from $97 to almost $200 based on the
time of purchase. For two days, ticket holders were able to hang out in the
cooperative weather while listening to their favourite beats from acts such as
Steve Angello (1/3 of Swedish House Mafia), Steve Aoki, DeadMau5 and Tiesto.
Although the lineup for the VELD music
festival was more stacked and jammed with superstar names, Digital
Dreams encompassed all aspects of the perfect summer music festival.
Digital
Dreams was held at Ontario place, which is the perfect venue and area for a music festival. With the stage
and space availability, ravers were able to roam the park without getting
caught in a huge crowd of people. Since the Ontario Place complex has regular
concerts and entertainment events, the technical aspects and sound systems
surpassed that of VELD’s, which was held in a park. In my opinion, Digital Dreams
was also far better organized than the VELD festival. With the heat and sun
blazing down on you, it was necessary for both festivals to provide free water
refills at designated stations. At Digital Dreams, I was able to distinguish
this station right away and with multiple stations available at prime
locations, they made it very easy for attendees to come and go to get their
bottles refilled. The VELD music
festival had over 20,000 more people attend their event than Digital
Dreams with only one water refill station. It’s safe to say that I didn’t even
attempt to get my water refilled at VELD. Just the line itself was more than
enough reason for me to buy my water.
Another huge
selling point of Digital Dreams is that Ontario Place is right on the lake shore.
The weather was made that much more tolerable and the view was beautiful.
Imagine dancing and enjoying yourself to your favourite music then all of a
sudden you look around and all you see is the skyline of Toronto with the CN
tower flashing red and white to celebrate the birth of your country. Oh yeah,
Digital Dreams is held the long weekend of Canada Day.
Did you
attend any summer music festivals this year? Which was your favourite?
